Spiralling
In 2019 we stood in front of a sheep field. Not really knowing where to begin or where the Kith journey would take us. We just knew that we needed a spiral. A place for people to spend a moment and work with the sacred shape.
Whether you believe it or not, there’s something magical about spending a few moments to stand at the entrance to the spiral with the energy of the earth, stone in hand. When you take the first few steps you find a speed which feels right. Turning your attention to the path, your purpose and your journey. It’s beautiful in its simplicity.
When you reach the middle you’ve spent a few moments focusing on your questions, your troubles, your intentions. Often just those few moments can help bring a little clarity, or quiet to a busy mind.
Walking in reverence to your exit you feel a weight has been lifted, or you’ve gathered the strength of the spiral to go about your day.
Whilst our beloved spiral brings those who spend the time there solace, there’s more to it than simply walking the path.
The task of keeping the spiral in it’s shape is a weekly job. It’s one which is mindful and slow. Your hands busy with tending the shape, plucking out the creeping grass and layering the rocks back into position.
We love this homestead task. It’s steady and simple, it doesn’t require too much brain power or physical labour. You can take your time and let your mind wander. And when you step back after you’re done, the neat curling shape is presented in all its glory.
You’re welcome to spend a few moments there in whichever manner you choose. It’s a peaceful spot, take your time.
At Home:
You can make a simple spiral in sand/flour on a tray if you haven’t access to outside space. The movement of a hand or a stick along a spiral trail has the same benefits.
In an open space, a woodland/beach/park, try making spiral patterns in the earth or by laying sticks/leaves/rocks.
On the Isle of Skye, Fairy Glen has it’s own spiral which has been used for a beautiful earth meditation for years. Simple in it’s construction but used with reverence in the beautiful space.
