Homemade Air Fresheners
These are so good! We have one in the yurt and it just brings a whole new sensory level to the space. I’m a sucker for eucalyptus a the moment so that’s my go-to scent this year. Lavender is a sure fire winner too. I love that they’re so easy to make and totally customisable to your mood or the changing season. I’m thinking citrusy scents in the summer and warming scents in the autumn. See how you get on and be sure to let me know what you go for.
Materials Needed:
These measurements are approximate, the “cups” aren’t precise but a simple way of gauging how much is going in.
2 cups Bicarbonate Soda
1/4 cup Water
Essential oils of your choosing
Silicone cupcake tray/cupcake cases/greaseproof paper to make cases - whichever you have to hand in the house
Mixing bowl
Spoon
How to make…
Turn your oven on to 200oc and then prepare your cases for the mixture to go into. The process won’t take very long so best to get these ready first.
Mix together the bicarbonate of soda and water. It should form a thick paste and will have a strange texture (akin to fingernails on a chalkboard! Weird) which almost crunches like snow when you spoon it into the cases. If it’s runny, add more bicarb, if it’s too stiff, add a drop more water. totally scientific right?! You should see me bake!
Spoon the mixture into the cases so they’re about 1/2 full.
Bake in the oven until the “pucks” are hard, between 15-20 minutes depending on your oven.
Once the pucks have cooled you can add your scents of choice. Between 5-10 drops depending on how strong you like it.
Pop your puck onto a plate and enjoy.
Notes
These should last between 4-6 weeks. When you’re done with them, just add to vinegar (either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar) and make a all purpose cleaning spray.
Be sure to keep them out of reach of children and animals.
Keep them in an air tight container.
You can use these in so many different places…
- in the car boot
- under the bin liner
- under the sink
- in the shoe cupboard
- in the bathroom
