As the spring approaches, the homestead will take on a huge transformation. Leaves coming back onto the trees, animals returning and mostly our community garden will really take off.

This is a space for everyone to get hands on, tending to the crops, weeding, maintaining and growing in all sense of the word.

We really need your help on this. Currently all groundwork is being done by the two of us. Whilst we have an abundance of enthusiasm, we don’t have infinite energy and resources (especially with our kids in tow!)

The vision for the Homestead is for it to be a place of communal learning for everyone.

The garden is a perfect place for folks to do this. For those of you who tend allotments, a veg patch or garden know, it’s a perpetual cycle.

What we’re asking is that as a group of adults we show our little ones how to conduct themselves amongst a community. Taking the initiative to give back.

Each week in the yurt we’ll have a list of “jobs” which need tending to.

From weeding specific beds, collecting supplies or tending to different areas.

For example, we recently were gifted a huge stack of wood and woodchip. This needs to be placed into the areas which need it most; the firewood stack, the pathways, the woodland. Together with your little one, are you able to take a wheelbarrow full to the woodland paths? Could you carry a piece of wood to the woodpile?

If you arrive early or stay late for a class, perhaps see whether you’re able to assist with the checklist. If you’re unsure, come ask us. We’re in a wonderful position to be able to learn together. By no means are the two of us experts, we’re guardians of the land as much as you. Our job is to protect and improve the patch we’re lucky enough to be caring for.

The added benefit of lending a hand is that your little one is learning too! How to give back, proactively thinking of how to do more and learn about why they’re doing it? Storing firewood for the next winter, rebuilding homes for animals and why,  protecting the pathways we walk on.

To build this garden into something we can all benefit from, we’re also in need of the following…

  • loo roll inners (y’know, the middle cardboard bit)

  • Plastic fruit containers (blueberry/raspberry containers)

  • Good quality pallets

  • Planks of wood

  • Fencing

  • Garden tools (watering cans, small hand tools, buckets etc)

This season we’re hoping to find a tool shed, if you or anyone you know has one they’re looking to get rid of, let us know!

The big project is our eco-loo! Any hands or help for this would be muchly appreciated!

If you think you’d be able to help, please email us hello@kithhomestead.com or come chat to us.

Please if you have any suggestions or would like to talk more about how you can get involved, come chat! Give us a call or email us to arrange a time to see us and discuss your ideas.

All the very best,

Lorna and Charlotte xx
