Taking a moment…
When was the last time you did something which fills you up, just a little bit. Not some grand self care routine, stunning vista for all to see or weekend retreat away from the world. Not writing in a gratitude journal for the sake of writing in a gratitude journal.
I’m talking about those little moments when you’re stopped in your tracks by something special to you. The soul filling tiny moments.
The last month has been a blur of compost loo building, toddler chasing, planning planning planning, homesteading life. Finding my feet day by day.
It’s been a wonderful juggle finding a balance at home and actually, it feels really great. But now and then a tiny moment stops me in my tracks and re-sets my soul.
The latest tiny moment happened in the hardware store, buying (yet another) can of paint. As I waited for the chap to mix the paint I turned across to the 500 paint swatch cards to my side.
A full rainbow spectrum of colours. They’re really beautiful all together like that aren’t they. My eyes darting to find a resting place on a shade I like. Do you have the same set of colours you always come back to? For me, I scan through to our wedding colours; teal, orange, yellow, navy and pale grey. But those aren’t my favourite.
My go-to perfect shade of green. A beautiful mix of deep forests, curling ferns and soft mosses. The colour which cocoons me in comfort.
So as I scan to find it, I breathe a content breath, stop and smile. This all happened in a few milliseconds, it was a frivolous act of joyful simplicity. It filled me up in the tiniest of ways and genuinely gave me a bounce to my step as I swung the paint can at my side walking to the checkout.
The little tiny moments which fill up our souls but probably wouldn’t make any sense to anyone else are so precious. What do your tiny moments look like? The things which are so overlooked and underrated yet make your heart leap. The mundane made magical.
Running your hand through long grass.
Folding a piece of paper perfectly in half.
Putting on a pair of sunglasses which feel like a hug to your eyes.
Seeing a cow run.
Smelling wet concrete after a rain shower on a hot day.
The joy of wearing your favourite outfit which actually doesn’t look that great but you FEEL great in.
Kissing your child’s fresh-out-the-bath face.
Try to find those moments in the week. A tiny moment for just you. A little happiness boost and learn to lean into it.
